Discover a little treasure at Trinity River Island Recreation Area. You may already know this location near Wallisville in Chambers County – as a great place to launch your boat. But don’t miss the Visitor Center, which houses the Sistine Chapel of Chambers County- a ceiling painted with beautiful local birds. A wall displays an interactive mural of a river scene. Beside each animal’s image is a button that produces the animal’s call for audio identification. Other exhibits include local history, fish identification, and boating safety. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sunday, and federal holidays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On the grounds is a picnic peninsula, flanked on one side by the Trinity River and the other
by the abandoned river course. Small cypress trees and pavilions shade picnic tables and barbeque pits, providing a nice place for wildlife viewing while you grill your fresh catch from the nearby fishing pier.
Also at this location is a sixty foot observation platform overlooking a segment of the old river channel. This is an excellent alligator watching area, great for wildlife photographers.
Incorporate this stop into your next fishing trip. Or make it your first stop on your trip to the Wild side. Stay another day on the Trinity River. To make arrangements your accommodations, visit our area Lodging page.
