As we edge ever closer to summer with each sunset, I thought it would be a good idea to highlight some of the places in the county where you can put your boat, kayak, or toes in the water.

South of Anahuac, in the community of Oak Island is one of the Chambers County’s newly renovated parks. Jobe Beason Park was scheduled for some upgrades, including several boat slips of varying sizes, when Hurricane Ike rolled ashore in 2008. This community took a nasty beating, and the park was in serious need of some attention. You wouldn’t know it now. I find it to be one of the county’s most family-friendly parks, doing double-duty serving local residents and visitors with ease.

Situated on the edge of Double Bayou, just before it empties into Trinity Bay, this little park boasts four full-size boat ramps with a parking lot big enough to accommodate its visitors and their boat trailers.

Not only is it a good place to start your day on the water, it’s also a great destination. For those visitors from across Galveston Bay, this is a nice place to come ashore. The park is ideal for family reunions, birthday parties or just a cookout with fellow boating friends.

There is a great pavilion with restrooms, picnic tables, water, electricity and a great grill big enough to cook burgers for the whole gang. Nearby is a nice playground and ball field with backstop. There are many boat slips to tie up your vessel.

Within walking distance from Jobe Beason Park, you can grab some lunch and a cold one at Channel Marker 17. Proprietors Jimbo and Ernestine live above the bar, and if it’s your lucky day, you’ll find Ernestine in the kitchen cooking the couple’s signature dishes, Jimbo’s Badass Oysters and Mama’s Kickass Shrimp.  This is a great location to mix with the locals and maybe get a tip on where the fish are biting. If you are looking for an overnight stay, check out the Oak Island Motel.
